You all with your tire irons are missing a point:

a) if the other guy has martial arts training, the tire isn't gonna make
   much difference (at least if he has it)

b) if presented with a threatening situation (real threat -- an enraged
   drunk/taxi driver attacking) and running isn't practical, you don't
immobilize him/her by using a car door ( what if you miss) you kick him in the
   kneecap and poke him in the eyes. (Don't try for the testicles -- they're
   too high, assuming your assailant is equipped with testicles.)
