I was under the impression that the tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge
in the San Francisco Bay area were partly used to subsidize AC Transit,
which operates public transportation (buses) over that same bridge,
and perhaps some ferries too.

Besides, you have to pay for continuously repainting the bridge.
(ever see a picture in which the bridge wasn't being repainted?)
