It's a disgrace, and I'm not sure why it is, but it fits in well with the general undercurrent of lawlessness that pervades eastern Massachusetts. Boston also bears the title as one of the filthiest cities in the country. Have you ever taken a look at the Common sidewalk on an ordinary day? And local governments, from the state goverment on down, are famous for their toleration of cronyism and business-as-usual. Our last governor, Ed King, had a special division called the "Office for Patronage"! No kidding. A friend of mine from Wisconsin mentioned that a recent scandal in their state legislature involved personal use of office telephones. All its members were required to repay the costs out of their own pockets. I was absolutely amazed, since this wouldn't even see the light of day in a Massachusetts newspaper--much too small-time. Massachusetts has a lot going for it, as I needn't mention, but furrners should expect to be surprised by lots more than just bad drivers! /Steve Dyer decvax!bbncca!sdyer
