When a person uses a handgun, it's easy to see who was directly responsible for an injury. When someone doesn't have one to begin with, and is injured because of the lack of a weapon it's a bit harder. There isn't anyone who is directly, clearly in the wrong. (I notice that no one has asked WHY the gun was necessary, but that's the right question to ask, so I'm not surprised it wasn't asked.
