Did I miss something here?  A lich is just another monster, albeit
extremely dangerous...  A sufficiently magicked sword backed up with
the right kind of magic should be able to dispose of one.

ps Perhaps the emphasis is no *one* person can do it, but there's some
pretty powerful offensive magic spells, so the sword is not really
necessary (and I haven't even mentioned magic items!)
