In fact a single issue of certain very rare comics in mint condition can bring $10,000 or more, and last I looked was appreciating at 10-20%/year. At a more mundane level, there are many comics in the $100-$1000 range, and many times more at the under-$100 level. Of course, volume increases as price decreases. There are only a few dozen issues (if that many) at the $10,000 range, and few collectors fanatical enough to shell out that much. Most trading takes place in the $1-$100 range I would imagine. Of course many comics are worth little more than cover price, the skill is in identifying which will go up (for example, due to bad distribution or widespread reader interest). I have several issues just bought off the stands in the earlier 70's (for 30-40 cents) which are worth $50 and up, and I just collect for enjoyment, not investment. I hope this has been of help.
