Well, tonight, I found the TRUE source of the name in an old issue of Maclean's magazine. Apparently a (early 50's) predecessor to the Cruise missile was a navy missile called the SNARK. Among its problems, the SNARK ended up missing it's targets by an AVERAGE of 1500km (~1000mi). One missile even ended up in the wrong hemisphere.
