I got a complaint that this joke was scrambled, so here it is
again...

MTS (the Michigan Terminal System) runs on 370/type systems and
when a task gets fouled up so horribly that the system doesn't know
what else to do, it stops the task (with the PSW pointing at the
word "SNARK" and prints a message on the operators console:  
"Snark in MTS."

  Well, tonight, I found the TRUE source of the name in an old
issue of Maclean's magazine.

  Apparently a (early 50's) predecessor to the Cruise missile was
a navy missile called the SNARK.  Among its problems, the SNARK
ended up missing it's targets by an AVERAGE of 1500km (~1000mi).
One missile even ended up in the wrong hemisphere.
 
   You can't get much worse than that.
