Ken:
   You are correct in remembering that the "snark" poem is
by Lewis Carroll.  The full title of the work is "The Hunting
of the Snark (An Agony in Eight Fits)," and you'll find it
in many Carroll anthologies.  Carroll, in his introduction,
gives a wonderful explanation for just HOW the bowsprit got
mixed with the rudder, as in the verse you quoted.
