Twelve, of course, was the column number where the command parser got lost. Even worse was: (ding, ding, ding) -- RECOVERY SAYS STAND BY -- which deafeningly pounded out on all the TTYs in the computer center. This meant that everything you had done that day was trashed, and it could be DAYS before the system recovered.
