dbx(1) is the symbolic debugger provided with 4.2BSD..
I have used it only a few times, but have found it to be
downright execellent.  Good job Berkeley.  It is at least an
order of magnitude better than sdb, and it will probably give
you a lot more help in solving the problems you mentioned.
