As I remember from deep in my memory, the rating M was for 'mature' audiences.
I think it dates from the rating system previous to the one we use now
(that is, g, pg, r, x). I think the old ones were g,m and x for 
general, mature, and x-rated audiences, respectively.

Then again, I could be a crazed lunatic.
