To answer one question: Yes--many protesters at Michigan were fans of the
alma mater.  We'd smoke a lot of dope & watch (usually) great football.
When I got to Wisconsin as a grad student, I was horrified to find that
only conservative jock types went to football games, but then the quality
of play (back then, anyway) was quite inferior to what I had been used to.
