However, to answer your question, YES G-dspell was a movie. It stared Victor Garber and David Haskell and was set in NYC. It was made in 1973. Perhaps the most delightful moment was during the song "All for the Best" which was sung (at least part of it) in front of the great "light sign" (the one you used to see in the intro to Saturday Night Live) with "Jesus" and "Judas" dancing in front of it, "light figures" as their shadows.
