I'd rather program in FORTRAN. Music has melody, rhythm, etc. D*sco has a constant pounding bass drum, maybe a couple of cymbols and someone screaming "baby baby baby". You want to listen to that? Might as well listen to a punch-press machine. Its just as much 'music' as d*sco is. Also just as obnoxious. Only difference is they don't play punch-press noise on 90% of the radio stations, elevators, and stores. D*sco was very hard to avoid. This ubiqtousness is probably responseable for much of the hatred of d*sco. I haven't heard Kraftwerk's newer albums, has their sound changed? _A_u_t_o_b_a_h_n certainly is about as far away from d*sco as I can imagine. Trying to pigenhole different types of music into neat little boxes doesn't work too well. We would need too many boxes. There are just too many types of music to just lump things into classical/jazz/pop-rock/c&w/??? Which box do we put fusion in? How do we classify classical pieces done by 'rock' artists? I can't call ELP's version of "Pictures at an Exhibition" rock, but many people who are into 'pure' classical refuse to call it classical, either. The term 'classical rock' was invented, but ELP didn't agree, they did "Nutrocker" as their idea of what 'classical rock' was. Then there is the 'third stream', a mixture of jazz with classical. Which box do we put this in? And of course, there's 'Gospel rock', which is rock music with Christian lyrics. I gave up trying to pigenhole music a long time ago, especially since many of my favorites are mixtures of different types. There is only one 'sound' I can pigenhole: d*sco goes in the NOISE box, it sure isn't music. If saying "D*sco sucks" makes me a racist, then I guess I'm a racist. climbing into my Nomex (tm?), Dave Seifert ihnp4!ihuxl!seifert ps. I put an '*' in d*sco to be consistent with those who put one in other offensive words, eg sh*t. yes, there are misspelled words in this article, but 'spelltell' doesn't know how to spell them either. -- Dave Seifert ihnp4!ihuxl!seifert
