I'll be switched if it wasn't 3 hours after I read Lee McLoughlin's article
about bad grep flags (3954.ukc) in this group that I had the same problem.
The grep that caused it was from a Berkeley 2.8 tape.  The -s flag is not
documented in the System 3 manual, but is in the code. It is also in 4.1bsd.
