It's pretty unusual in the U.S. I've looked in several metropolitan phone books and have never seen another Opalko. Opalka, on the other hand, is very common. My paternal grandparents came here from Hungary around the turn of the century. I always thought Opalko was just another nice Magyar name, until I asked a few people who were born in Hungary, and they never heard of it, either! Does anyone know of any lists of Hungarian, Yugoslavian, or German surnames?
