I remember the story also. It was a really good idea.
I read it in a book I bought in Britain which was a collection
of sf stories. If I remember rightly there was also one in the
book called "Highway J" which was about time travel.

I think the book was called "10 years of science fiction".
(There was some number in the title.. probably wasnt 10!).
Sorry.. dont know who the author was!.
