I didn't. I should have remembered that good pitching dominates the playoffs and the Series, and not get sentimental (sniff-sniff) over the Wheeze Kids or the Geezers or what not. I am quite impressed by the Orioles' pitching staff. I also think it is fair that we give K. Glass credit for picking the Orioles in 5 (I believe that is what he said), considering how much I and others have been kidding him about his predictions. But I think he had something to drink when he made the other predictions since the names were right but the predictions about them were slightly off. The Phillies lost the only game that Carlton pitched. Maddox was one of the few bright spots for the Phillies (winning Game 1 with a homer, the only Phillies' win). Eddie Murray, until Game 5, looked like he was going to have a horrible series, and as a result, did not get the MVP award (although one might say he was the MVP for Game 5). Ken, if you added a few 'nots' or 'won'ts' or removed the same where appropriate, I would make you my baseball betting advisor forever. But in all seriousness, you were a lot closer to the mark than I was. By the way, did anyone hear Howard Cosell call Rick Dempsey a "little tiger"? My wife says she did during Game 3. I missed the game unfortunately. If this is true, where is that guy from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference? He should be complaining about Howard using demeaning terms again. Howard should stop calling people animals. Just because his grandchildren are wild doesn't mean he should talk about others in the same fashion. Howard, if anyone is an animal, you are, you j-ck-ss. In all seriousness, I feel that he is, as Bowie Kuhn would say about Curt Flood, "a detriment to baseball." He even insulted Reggie Jackson. When, during Game 5, talking about Rick Dempsey's profusion (thanks Howard) of extra base hits during the Series, he said Dempsey "was hitting like Reggie Jackson; the way he (Jackson) did a few years ago." The man has no taste; Jackson was on the broadcast team. We also heard one of the radio guys in the club house talking to Gary Renicke (I don't remember how to spell it): "Rick Dempsey was the unanimous choice for MVP; well, not unanimous since I didn't vote for him. Hey Gary, he shouldn't have been MVP, right? You guys are the We Team. He shouldn't MVP, right?" What a clod. I liked one of Earl Weaver's comments. When talking about Mike Schmidt's slump (and also about the Phillies as a team), he said that in a short series being at most seven games, that the big guns may very well be cold and that this should not be any reflection of their value to the team. Schmidt didn't lead the NL in HRs (I think) for nothing. Even Eddie Murray was in a slump until Game 5. This is a paraphrase of his remarks. Earl is a classy guy. Howard would build up whoever is winning handily and pick on whoever is down. Howard is not classy. Enough of this verbosity (thanks, Howard). This series is history from the eyes of this reporter (bye-bye, Howard). Scott Pector
