The most useful answer came from several individuals, and amounted to looking for the command name in the core file. Since I did not have a copy of the Berkeley `strings' program, I was reduced to an `od -c' of the core file, which did turn up the command name. Many suggestions to use `sh -x' were also received, but due to the fact that the program which actually died was at the end of a long pipeline, didn't help.
