I believe that 400 series Dataset(tm) equipment uses DTMF
signalling. This means that a 40x Dataset or compatible modem will
accept Touch-Tone(tm) signals.  I believe one of these is
specifically designed for tone-in/voice-out applications, and has an
audio input from the terminal equipment.  I'm not sure whether the
data output is ASCII or some other code.
