Does hot humid air also decrease the need for width in the runway for
747s?  And I suppose if there's less lift then the plane weighs more 
when it comes down and needs a heavily-reinforced mil-spec runway for
even civilian loads.

Or maybe the Cubans just got carried away and decided to build a *really
good* runway far in excess of what they really needed.

Good point about the length though, even if your message got chopped
short after "Private pilots who never fly [into combat zones:-)]."
