    For years, the New Republic has been the
intellectual journal of the left, as the National Review has been to the
right.  
Does this mean that the left has lost that intellectual fervor and
surrendered to conservative thought??

No, the New Republic has been the intellectual journal of the LIBERALS,
a more appropriate counterpart to National Review would be the Nation.
Since liberals are the left of the MAINSTREAM, its not surprising they
have moved right, right along with the mainstream.
