	    Girl shot by stepdad hunting for prowler

  FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - An 8-year-old girl was in critical condition
yesterday after being shot by her stepfather, who said he thought she was
a prowler.

  Quinton Palmer, 26, told police he and his wife were watching television
in their bedroom about 3:30 a.m. when she heard a noise.

  "I got my gun and looked out the bathroom window, and I saw a guy dodge
down behind my car," said Palmer.

  Palmer said he then heard a thud and thought the prowler had broken
into the house.

  "Then I shot my little girl," he said, sobbing.
