The line printers all expected FORTRAN style carriage control to be present in your file. So, if you wanted to print something that was not in this format, you had to copy it to another file using a special command that placed a blank at the beginning of each line and then print the new file. Every now and then someone would forget this procedure and would be very embarassed to receive an x hundred page printout with one line at the top of each page.
