Reminds me of a similar joke about an airplane in trouble:

Same situation (pilot asking for suicide volunteers).  An Englishman stands
up, shouts "God save the Queen!" and jumps out.  It's not enough.  So a
Frenchman jumps out, with a shout of "Vive la France!"  Still the plane is
not light enough.  So a Texan yells "Remember the Alamo!" and pushes out the
Mexican sitting next to him....
