Co., Everett, Wash Lines: 22 Three Indian maidens were pregnant at the same time, and went to the chief to ask how to insure that they would have sons. The chief replied that they should sleep on hippopotamus skins throughout their pregnancy. One of them did, but the other two were not able to obtain one, and so they slept on their usual horse hides. When they delivered, the one who had been able to follow the chief's advice had twin sons, but the other two had only one son each, illustrating a well-known mathematical relationship: "The sons of the squaw on the Hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws on the other two hides."
