This from a 1951 copy of the American College Dictionary, printed 7 years after the end of WWII. The 1970 American Heritage Dictionary offers a third definition as well: 3. any widespread destruction. Neither defines the Holocaust as referring a specific historical event. (The American Heritage Dictionary is, as its name implies, quite cautious about sanctioning recently defined terms.) Kenneth Almquist
