I was using a Plexus machine just after they came out, and it was running v7. In v7 the system name is compiled into all the programs and since we had only binaries, either an expert (me) could patch in a new name with adb or just use whatever name Plexus shipped in the binaries (I think the name was 'plexus'). A naive user trying to bring up a net connection (if this is even possible) may have missed this! Fortunately, they now run system III with some fancy auto-configure stuff that lets you specify a system name and the uname() system call digs it up. Also, how likely is it that a new site may choose a name that already exist by chance. There are a lot of sites out there, and my lists are never completely up to date, so... Has anyone ever done this? Jim Reuter (decvax!cincy!jreuter)
