It makes it easier for readers to form a more distinct image of the poster. Off the top of my head I can think of the signatures of rabbit!jj, tekcad!franka, gatech!spaf, jrc, etc. It is easier for me to associate certain types of articles (ex: frank adrian articles) with a distinctinctive signature than with a simple name. In some sense, I know posters better if the use a distinctive signature. This all depends on the poster CONSISTENTLY using the same signature. Another Message In The Bottle from Robert DeBenedictis
