What was buried in the garden which the dog kept going after??

a McGuffin - if you are a Hitchcock buff, you know that this is something
that keeps the audience's interest and often motivates characters within
the film but has little if anything to do with what is really important to
the director.  The real answer to the question, Cornell Woolrich's
original story not excepted, is your guess is good as anyone's.
