It is a very large area, quite a few runs of all three colors. The skiing is patently excellent, but the thing that stands out most in my memory is the people--all of them, from the lift operators to the skiers to the locals. Everyone is friendly! I have always come away with a very good feeling for the people. All you Vail fans who like BIG mountains but are tired of the jet-set hype should try Steamboat. It is not so crowded usually, because it is a rather long trip for Texans and Oklahomans. Also, the town (Steamboat Springs) offers many outstanding restaurants and night spots. I seem to remember reading a brochure that went something like this: More snow than Snowmass More powder than Vail More sun than Aspen More bars than Utah W. Carey Johnson, Jr. [duke!uok!wjohnson]
