My experiences with renting planes away from home are limited but I have found
the only problem was to find an FBO which had a person who could give me a
checkride (they usually won't let you rent until their own person checks you
out).  Usually I couldn't just walk in and get checked out;  the best I got
was the next day.  Once the checkride is out of the way, no problem.  So,
my reccomendation is to try to make some sort of appointment to get checked
out with the FBO as soon as you arrive.  They typically did want to see
my logbook in addition to the usual stuff though.
