Knowing a little bit about both gentlemen, I would guess that (a) Claremont is not overly enthusiastic about this caricature; (b) Byrne knows it and can't resist reminding him; (c) Byrne also figures that the "expert" reader will catch the fact that two references are being made at once, and the other readers won't know what's going on anyway. Or perhaps the Fairmont is the North American model which corresponds to the Prefect, and Byrne got carried away with his "translation."
