A slight clarification:
Even if your computer system and RS232 safety grounds are in place
(as ours were) you will receive some damage in the event of an AC power
fault of the type described, as indeed happened to us.  Without the
saftey grounds, damage to the computer would have been much worse.
The service technician might have been electrocuted for his trouble
as well.
