From what I've read, the NYT seems to be a mouth organ for the liberal left (at least in their editorials). I disagree! The NYT is a conservative business man's newspaper and is primarily read by business men on their way into work. Since it is important to get the story straight the Times has a policy of quoting releases directly as opposed to giving opinion on it. Where else can one consistently find the President's speeches and news conferences quoted verbatim. Since news of foreign events frequently effects business in this country the Times developed the best international news reporting network in the country and is recognized for having done so. Now on to the Time's editorial section. The Times maintains both an editorial page and a column page opposite the editorial page. The column page is where such noted liberals as William Safire and Anthony Lewis (both former speech writers for Republican presidents) write. Looking at today's (Saturday November 5, 1983) editorial section I see an editorial supporting that liberal of liberals, Senator Dole (calling him heroic) for attempting to resolve the deficit crises. Another editorial proposes that invasion of Grenada may be all for the best since the U.S. will provide Grenada with more foreign aide than it would otherwise have done. The lead editorial is against apartheid in South Africa. Real daring liberal position with Jack Kemp leading the charge. I have found the Times to be in the middle of road or slightly to the right of middle of the road. Magazines which are slightly left of the middle of the road are the New York Review of Books and the New Republic. What has happened in the this country, USA, is that people have become so conservative that just seeing factual reporting has become "liberal." Since the Times concentrates on accuracy in reporting it is frequently viewed as being "liberal." Larry Welsch houxu!welsch
