I just finished an article in the November Harper's by some journalists who reported on, among other things, what it's like inside of an African National Congress settlement in Tanzania. (Interesting, a little frightening; check it out.) Almost all of ANC's military aid is from the Soviet Union. But most of their economic aid is from--Sweden and Norway. What stake do Sweden and Norway have in the overthrow of the apartheid regime? None that I can see. If someone does have some idea, I'd like to hear it. Possibly--just possibly--these Scandinavian governments, supported by their peoples, look on South Africa for what it is: a slave state, one which is rather tame by comparison to the USSR. --- Michael Turner (ucbvax!ucbesvax.turner)
