It's quite simple to put *51* stars on a rectangular field:  Simply alternate
rows of 9 and 8, with the rows of 8 staggered from the rows of 9, i.e.

* * * * * * * * *
 * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * *
 * * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * * *
 * * * * * * * *

The snag is that I find that I can't imagine how the existing 50 are arranged!
