The standard old /bin/mail implements the host1!host2!host3!...!user syntax, not UUCP! Case in point: path!user or host!user is useless to uucp (and uux), host!~user and host!~/user (and host!/file) is useful with uucp (host!command for uux). The mail path forwarding is achieved by successive remote executions of /bin/rmail as the address is reduced for each single hop forwarding. So modifying uucp (and uux) syntax only buys you confusion.
