    hi.  can someone tell me how to turn the doc files on many 
    SIGM and CPMUG files into real ascii?  To my terminal, they are
    just a bunch of control characters...

On ITS, :TYPE8 will type out such a file.  The equivalent program for
TOPS-20 can be found on MIT-MC in "AR7:GZ;TYPE8 >" (FTP it to TYPE8.MID and
do @MIDAS TYPE8 to make a TYPE8.EXE).
