The technical inaccuracies and the poor direction seriously weakened the story. For example, where did the farmer get a horse to ride? He had a hard enough time keeping his daughter in the cellar with her pants on much less hide and take care of a horse. I grew up in Kansas City and got my BS in Physics from Kansas University in Lawrence. At least they did do a little prebomb film justice to those two beautiful cities. One point not mentioned is that the silo's in that part of the country were inactivated several years back.
