I once knew a guy who had a cat who wouldn't use the litter box.  Just before
the cat stopped using the litter box, my friend switched to a new brand of 
litter (I believe it was litter green, but I'm not positive since it was a 
few years ago).  This may or may not be your probleem, but it's something to
think about.
