Actually, it is possible to find a lot of information on Europeans
pre-WWII.  My mom has had a lot of luck with parish records, both
actually in Europe and reproduced on microfilm by the Mormons.
(I'm not sure what this has to do with mainland China, but somebody
mentioned the data was unavailable in Europe...)
