I dunno how you can say that (indirectly to Tom O' Connor). As I see it, the quote means that you show your love by granting somebody their absolute freedom. You'd rather see him/her happy with somebody else than unhappy with you. And if they come to you, they have found that you are the one that makes them the most happy. So you live happily ever after. A bit simplistic, but that's the way I see it. I'd rather see the one I love happy, even if I can't be the one doing it. I guess, like everything, it's subjective.
