This research is based on a sample of scientists and engineers. It is not known whether this is due to a. single people have less responsibility and thus can wait for a better job when fired or can choose a job that is more interesting to them as opposed to the highest paying job. b. there is a correlation between not being successful in the world of personal relationships and not successful at work. Since much of being successful in work (at least according to most things I have read) involves people skills, this is not an unreasonable hypothesis. c. someone in the house encourages/chastises a person to do their best d. the lack of a life partner (significant other) causes depression which interferes with work achievement.
