It certainly looks to be worth it, and why throw it away and not have the benefits of such a useful device until, as the news story indicated, a "next-generation" version is launched in the 1990's? I would think that the IRAS could be refilled every n missions, or a big helium tank could be attached to it so it could run for much longer between fillings. Or are other parts of the detector degenerating so that there is more to it than the helium running out? Will Martin -------
