He had hidden in a small compartment during pre-flight operations, and waited until the crew was aboard (and in suspended animation) before emerging. He then proceeded to reprogram The Robot to destroy all important systems on the ship shortly after takeoff. Unfortunately (for Smith), he was trapped on board during launch, and was unable to cancel his previous instructions to the robot, which proceeded to wreak havoc and cause the Jupiter to become Lost In Space... --Lauren--
