(The L-5 Society is one of the oldest space-advocate groups, aimed at promoting space colonies in particular and space development in general.) There has been a minor change of strategy: rather than trying to get people together and get something going, we're now trying to get something going in hopes that it will attract people. There is a meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, the 15th, at 1930 in room 251 of the Board of Education building at 155 College St. The main event will be a talk on "Advanced Space Propulsion" by Henry Spencer (blush). I haven't done anything as formal as an abstract for it, but just off the top of my head, here's a quick "teaser": The main obstacle to space development is simply getting there. The propulsion technology of the Shuttle is useful, but we can do much better. The technology to explore the Solar System -- not just occasional probes, but serious manned exploration and colonization -- is within our grasp. Propulsion methods which could send expeditions to the nearer stars will be practical within a few decades. I'll try to survey the more interesting ideas now being looked at. All are welcome; membership in the L-5 Society is not necessary. The talk will not be mathematical or highly technical, so that anyone with an interest in space should be able to follow it. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
