Matsuyama University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland: "Aerial image understanding". ABSTRACT: The speaker has developed two image understanding systems for aerial photograph interpretation. One of them developed at Kyoto University, Japan about four years ago. It incorporates "production system" as the control scheme, and has the ability of "focus of attention" to facilitate image analysis. The other system is currently under development at the University of Maryland. The characteristics of this system are (i) knowledge-based low level image analysis, (ii) selection of appropriate appearance using contextual information, and (iii) spatial reasoning based on evidence accumulation. The lecture will include the comparison between these two systems as well as the explanation of the fundamental ideas and the demonstration of the experimental results.
