The basic idea of the EGR is to reduce combustion temperatures to reduce NOX production. Should the EGR valve be disconnected or stuck closed the combustion temperatures will rise thus aggravating the tendency toward knocking. Give a check to the EGR system before you tamper witht the ignition timing and advance curves. Another source may be the simple buildup of carbon in the cylinders allowing hot spots to exist.
