   There was a paper in a recent ACM Transactions on Computer Graphics
describing the algorithms and data structures needed to implement multiple-
window bit-mapped displays in an efficent manner.
   It only made provisions for square windows. This seems reasonable, since
rounded corner windows (as on the Lisa) seem to increase the complexity without
an increase in utility.

   Other good books would be the recent batch about the implementation of 
SmallTalk (ask in net.lang.st80). You might also want to ask about this in
net.graphics.
